I read Schalk’s “Adobe announces Open Screen Project” at DZone today. Quite amazing what Adobe is doing here. They skip the licensing of the most important protocols and file formats. These are free to use now, independent from the platform, context, whatever you like.

...the Livescribe Smartpen, which comes with a Java-based development kit. The pen is cool: it's a pen with ink, but it also has a tiny camera in the pen-tip that is watching what you write, 72 times a second. It records all of your writing strokes, and also has a microphone built into it so it can record what you hear, too. It's great for taking notes, in ways that is much easier to understand when you try it yourself. But I'll try to explain just part of it here.

Actually Geert’s talk was called “Boldly Go Where Java Has Never Gone Before” but to me it was really centered on the idea of Java-the-language as interface.

I was using the iUI toolkit, which contains a number of CSS styles and JavaScript event handlers to make iPhone Web apps look and feel somewhat like native iPhone applications. As I was working with iUI, I realized I was building up a library, so I converted everything to a Rails plugin: rails_iui.

Adobe's announcement of the open screen project is the biggest announcement for the world of RIA today. Pretty much every player in the mobile market, with the exception of Apple, seems to be supporting this effort.

For years, Java ME developers have faced difficult choices when it comes to application UIs. Because of the multitude of platform and device features and differences there was really no common UI story - there is MIDP for CLDC and AWT for CDC, APIs like JSR 226 (SVG) and JSR 209 (AGUI), and finally a number of 3rd party toolkits such as J2ME Polish.

An interesting couple of posts in the past week by Morten Hjerde, in which he compiles Norwegian usage data (mobile phones with color screens, support for Java and a web browser).

Recently on the Java Champions alias some people were surprised to learn that Java has been available on WIndows Mobile for some time now. Obviously we aren't publicizing that fact enough ;-) so here we go:

For years we have heard about the huge opportunity the mobile web offers developers. With billions of handsets in service, if even just one percent of them use your service you can potentially make millions!

The iPhone is one of the most compelling and exciting user interfaces to appear on any consumer electronic device, with many innovations that make it a pleasure to use. This article demonstrates how you can implement these features in your .NET applications in a step-by-step format as you recreate the iPhone interface using Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) technology with both Visual Studio 2008 and Microsoft Expression Blend.

Speaking at a recent conference, Forum Nokia VP Tom Libretto, confirmed that the Finnish telecom giant has a new touchscreen device in the pipeline, tentatively called "Tube" (details and pics at symbian-freak.com.) In marked contrast to Apple, it appears that Nokia is embracing standards, and the Nokia Tube will likely have Java inside from the start! Even though Sun VP, Eric Klein, announced officially that Sun intends to support Java on the iPhone, Apple's cooperation (or lack thereof) could still be a problem for Java on the iPhone.

With the release of Apple's SDK for building iPhone applications, many have plunged head-first into this new platform for the first time, with the new-found excitement that comes in discovering something entirely new and innovative. The energy surrounding the iPhone has been building steadily since its release last June, and Apple's initial "beta" offering of their SDK gave developers many of the tools they needed to get engaged.

Last week Apple opened up the iPhone and introduced a software developer’s kit (SDK) to allow third parties to develop software for the iPhone. This was a great step forward in that Apple had, for some significant period of time, suggested that writing software within the browser environment was sufficient, and that no native developer platform was needed at all.

Like 10 bajillion other Mac fans yesterday, I downloaded the iPhone SDK. It took me four tries to get it, but I finally got it. I installed all 5.3 GB of it, and rebooted (reboot? what is this, Windows?) and then created a sample project, just like the ADC video shows. I excitedly clicked the 'Build and Go' button and... nothing. Well, not completely nothing, but not what was supposed to happen.

So with hardware accelerated 3D graphics, an integrated database API, tightly integrated performance monitoring tools, and a highly specialized version of the Cocoa framework tweaked just for the iPhone and rechristened as Cocoa Touch, the iPhone's just-announced SDK sounds like a winner. But how does it compare to its well-entrenched competitors from Microsoft, Nokia, and the iPhone community itself? Let's have a look.
