	<title>Android losing its mojo fast</title>
    <link>http://web2announcer.com/go/2709604</link>

    Android started off being a great idea, from a great company, with lots of support from carriers and manufacturers, and an awesome $10million contest to get developers drooling. With some stiff competition from Apple, and loss of developer morale, I’m afraid of what the future might hold for this platform.

	<title>Introducing a Lightweight UI Toolkit: Bringing Desktop Development into Java ME</title>
    <link>http://web2announcer.com/go/2702592</link>
    <author>unknown@DZone.com</author>
    <content:encoded>
    Sun Microsystems announced LWUIT at the last JavaOne Conference. It is an advanced user interface library, a feature much desired by JavaME developers. With LWUIT [1], you can develop powerful interfaces avoiding lcdui Form&#039;s constrains and without reinventing the wheel. In this series of articles, you are going to develop a simple but complete application to show weather forecasts (reading a RSS from Yahoo! Weather [2]), showing different capabilities from this library. Although it is still too soon to consider it stable, the source code isn&#039;t published yet, and there aren&#039;t too many devices &quot;officially&quot; tested (although it is in fact very portable between devices), LWUIT is one of the most important innovations in the JavaME world.

    This tutorial has helpful pointers for developers who are just getting started with Android. In addition to Google’s documentation on the SDK itself, there are lots of tools that come with the SDK and others that you can download elsewhere that make it a little bit easier to work with Android.

    It&#039;s been several months since my last blog. The reason is that I have been deeply involved in this new product called MEP (Mobile Enterprise Platform) and I really couldn&#039;t say much about it. However, version 1.0 has just been released, so it&#039;s time to open the blog gates. See announcement here for additional info about MEP.

    RIM&#039;s soon-to-be-released &quot;iPhone Killer&quot; is pretty interesting. It features a multi touch screen with tactile feedback. Apparently, when you press an on-screen key, the screen actually depresses slightly and provides haptic feedback in the form of a buzz under your finger where you pressed on the screen. Just hearing about it, I&#039;m not sure it&#039;s something I&#039;d want, but I&#039;d love to feel it for myself. If it work well, it could be very cool. It uses WebKit for its browser. I also like how the phone does full QWERTY in landscape and RIM&#039;s SureType in portrait -- clever choice.

	<title>Cascada Breeze: Create, Test and Launch Mobile Applications</title>
    <link>http://web2announcer.com/go/2673453</link>
    <author>unknown@DZone.com</author>
    <content:encoded>
    Cascada Mobile, just release a beta of their Breeze mobile application development and distribution platform. What Breeze does is take applications that are written in HTML, JavaScript and CSS and compiles it into J2ME. It then tests the J2ME code against 100s of phones, ports them to those phones (a version is created for each phone type) and makes it easy for developers to distribute applications. Breeze also guides developers unfamiliar with writing mobile apps on how to use the native features of mobile phones such as contact lists or the camera.

    So you&#039;d think you&#039;d see a rush of developers dropping their Android projects to get on the the Apple bandwagon. But based on conversations we&#039;ve been having with developers, it doesn&#039;t look like that&#039;s happening. Why not?

    Yesterday we pointed out an image on Apple’s Web site that is indicative of an iPhone 3G displaying Adobe Flash content, but may have simply been a case of the company’s graphic design team cropping a Desktop browser image to fit the device’s screen. We’ve now discovered another bit of evidence that, albeit similarly speculative, would seem to show an iPhone 3G making use of Flash.

    Of course, $199 isn&#039;t the real price, from either side. But nobody cares. In the UK, the cheapest you&#039;ll manage is £99 ($194) for the 8GB handset, plus 18 months x £30 ($59) equals £639 ($1250).

    With much fanfare Apple announced the availability of the iPhone SDK. I downloaded it and someday plan to play around with it, though with the SDK already having gone through 4 or 5 beta releases (each a ~2GB download) I’ll probably wait a long time before cracking it open. However, for web applications the best way to integrate with an iPhone is still through the browser.

    As a Java developer, this discussion sounds familiar to you. Every now and then, you have to answer this question from customers, your marketing people, fellow developers,... . My personal answer on this question is shifting a bit from the &quot;Enterprise advantages&quot; to the &quot;Mobile opportunities&quot;. I see the same shift in other pieces of software, including GlassFish v3.

	<title>The coolest thing I saw at JavaOne 2008 was...</title>

    ...the Livescribe Smartpen, which comes with a Java-based development kit. The pen is cool: it&#039;s a pen with ink, but it also has a tiny camera in the pen-tip that is watching what you write, 72 times a second. It records all of your writing strokes, and also has a microphone built into it so it can record what you hear, too. It&#039;s great for taking notes, in ways that is much easier to understand when you try it yourself. But I&#039;ll try to explain just part of it here.

    Actually Geert’s talk was called “Boldly Go Where Java Has Never Gone Before” but to me it was really centered on the idea of Java-the-language as interface.

	<title>Rails Development for iPhone with rails_iui</title>

    <content:encoded>
    I was using the iUI toolkit, which contains a number of CSS styles and JavaScript event handlers to make iPhone Web apps look and feel somewhat like native iPhone applications. As I was working with iUI, I realized I was building up a library, so I converted everything to a Rails plugin: rails_iui.

    Adobe&#039;s announcement of the open screen project is the biggest announcement for the world of RIA today. Pretty much every player in the mobile market, with the exception of Apple, seems to be supporting this effort.

	<title>Coming soon: Swing for mobile Java, but better</title>

    For years, Java ME developers have faced difficult choices when it comes to application UIs. Because of the multitude of platform and device features and differences there was really no common UI story - there is MIDP for CLDC and AWT for CDC, APIs like JSR 226 (SVG) and JSR 209 (AGUI), and finally a number of 3rd party toolkits such as J2ME Polish.
